10 Ways Social Media Cripples Christians

If the Christian truly wants to grow in Christ and live a life that glorifies God, then don’t take your cue from Social Media. Here are ten ways social media seriously emasculates a Christian.

1. It Rewards Approval-Seeking

Likes, follows, and comments can condition users to seek external validation.

Potential effect:

Fear of disapproval.
Avoidance of unpopular opinions.
Identity tied to audience reaction.

Proverbs 29:25

“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.”

2. It Encourages Image Management

Young people may spend significant energy curating how they’re perceived.

Potential effect:

Authenticity gives way to branding.
Character becomes secondary to appearance.

Jesus emphasized the heart over outward appearance (Matthew 23).

3. It Lowers Tolerance for Discomfort

Algorithms quickly provide entertainment, distraction, and instant gratification.

Potential effect:

Reduced patience.
Difficulty persevering through challenging tasks.
Greater aversion to boredom.

Biblically, perseverance is a virtue (James 1:2–4).

4. It Can Replace Real Courage with Digital Signaling

Posting a slogan or opinion online can feel like meaningful action.

Potential effect:

Mistaking expression for legit, sacrificial service.

Users constantly see curated versions of others’ lives.

Online criticism can be immediate, public and brutal.

Self-censorship.

Constant notifications and short-form content compete for focus.

Quick outrage.
Difficulty listening.

Scripture commends being “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19).

9. It Encourages Comfort Over Discipline

Many platforms are designed to maximize engagement.

Potential effect:

More consumption.
Less creation.
Less disciplined use of time.

Ephesians 5:15–16 calls believers to make the best use of their time.

10. It Can Discourage Moral Courage

In environments where certain views draw intense criticism, some users may avoid expressing deeply held convictions.

Potential effect:

Silence rather than thoughtful engagement.
Greater conformity to perceived group norms.

This concern is sometimes connected to passages such as Galatians 1:10, which warns against living primarily to please people.

A Biblical Response

If viewed through a biblical lens, the antidote is not abandoning technology but cultivating virtues that help Christians use it wisely:

Courage instead of fear of people (Joshua 1:9; 2 Timothy 1:7).
Truthfulness instead of image management (Ephesians 4:25).
Self-control instead of impulsiveness (Galatians 5:22–23).
Diligence instead of distraction (Colossians 3:23).
Humility instead of self-promotion (Philippians 2:3–4).
Love expressed through action, not merely online expression (1 John 3:18).

The bottom line for the believer is this: use it, don’t let it use you!
