Keep Your Head on a Swivel

Keep Your Head on a Swivel

"The joy of the Lord will arm us against the assaults of our spiritual enemies and put our mouths out of taste for those pleasures with which the tempter baits his hooks."

- Matthew Henry

Paul closes with this:

“Be on the alert…” (Eph. 6:18b)

That’s not casual language.

That’s urgent.

Because you can have everything—

and still lose—

if you’re not paying attention.

Most people don’t fall—

because of one big moment.

They drift.

Slow.

Subtle.

Unnoticed.

They start strong.

Focused.

Disciplined.

Then life happens.

Things get busy.

Things get comfortable.

And they relax.

Just a little.

They skip a day.

Then a few.

They disconnect with their godly disciplines—

without realizing it.

And over time—

that small drift—

becomes a major gap.

That’s how it happens.

Not dramatic.

Gradual.

And because it’s gradual—

it’s dangerous.

Because you don’t see it—

until you feel the impact.

That’s why Paul says:

Stay alert.

Stay aware.

Because awareness prevents drift.

If you’re paying attention—

you catch things early.

Small changes.

Subtle shifts.

You notice when something’s off.

And you correct it—

before it becomes a problem.

But if you’re not alert—

you miss it.

And what you miss—

builds.

Until it shows up—

in a way you can’t ignore.

That’s why discipline matters.

Not for control—

but for awareness.

Daily biblical life patterns—

keep you grounded.

Time in the Word.

Time in prayer.

Time in good fellowship.

Not occasionally.

Consistently.

Because consistency keeps you sharp.

And sharpness keeps you ready for the enemy.

Another thing that kills awareness:

Distraction.

Not always bad things.

Just consuming things.

Noise.

Content.

Busyness.

It fills your time—

and blurs your focus.

And when your focus is gone—

your awareness drops.

And when awareness drops—

you become vulnerable to the powers of darkness.

That’s why you have to guard your attention.

Not everything deserves it.

And if you give it away constantly—

you won’t have it when it matters.

Another reality:

Fatigue.

You will get tired.

This is not easy.

Staying engaged—

takes effort.

And there will be moments—

where you feel worn down.

That’s normal.

But that’s also when you’re most vulnerable.

So you don’t quit.

You adjust.

You rest when needed.

But you stay engaged.

Because disengagement—

is where problems grow.

And once they grow—

they’re harder to deal with.

So you stay awake.

Not anxious.

Aware.

Present.

Dialed-in. Because the moment you drift—

you weaken.

And in a war—

weakness is costly.

The Weapon Most Christians Ignore 3 MIN READ ◦ DOUG GILES “The devil is nimble; he can run apace; he is light of foot; he hath overtaken many....They that would have heaven must run for it." - John Bunyan Paul ends the armor passage like this: “With all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit…” (Eph. 6:18a) Notice something. He lays out all the armor— then finishes with prayer. Not as an add-on. Not as a side note. As the thing that activates everything else. Because without...
