Defeating Guilt & Condemnation

Defeating Guilt & Condemnation

"The devil is nimble; he can run apace; he is light of foot; he hath overtaken many....They that would have heaven must run for it." - John Bunyan

Paul says:

Stand firm… having put on the breastplate of righteousness. (Eph. 6:14b)

Now we move from foundation—

to protection.

Because truth holds everything together—

but righteousness protects what matters most:

Your heart.

And if your heart gets compromised—

everything else follows.

A lot of people hear “righteousness”—

and immediately think about behavior.

“Be good.”
“Do better.”
“Try harder.”

That’s not what Paul is talking about.

This is not about earning something.

This is about wearing something.

The breastplate is not something you build—

it’s something you put on.That means it’s been given—

not achieved.

You need to understand this or you’ll get wrecked.

There are two sides:

1. Imputed righteousness (what God gives you)

This is your position.

You are made right with God—

through Christ.

Not because of your performance—

but because of His (Eph. 2:1-10).

That means:

You are accepted.
You are justified.
You are covered.

That’s your foundation (Eph. 1).

2. Lived righteousness (how you walk it out)

This is your practice.

You don’t earn your position—

but your position should affect your behavior (Eph. 4-5).

You live differently—

because you’ve been changed.

Not to earn righteousness—

but because you have it.

If you mix those up—

you’ll either become:

  • Legalistic (trying to earn it)
  • Or lazy (thinking behavior doesn’t matter)

Both are wrong.

The breastplate protects vital organs.

Heart. Lungs.

You get hit there—

you’re done.

Same spiritually.

If the enemy can hit your heart—

your identity, your confidence, your sense of worth—

he can take you out without touching anything else.

And that’s exactly where he aims.

The Main Attack: Condemnation

The enemy is called “the accuser.” (Rev. 12:10)

That’s his game.

Not always temptation.

Not always pressure.

Accusation.

“You’re not good enough.”
“You messed up again.”
“You’re disqualified.”
“You’re a fraud.”

And if you don’t have the breastplate on—

those hits land.

And when they land—

you start pulling back.

You stop praying.

You stop engaging.

You stop showing up.

Not because you don’t care—

but because you feel unworthy.

That’s how he shuts people down.

Not by destroying them—

but by convincing them to step out.

Righteousness Blocks That.

When you understand righteousness—

Those attacks don’t stick.

Because you don’t respond with feelings—

you respond with truth.

“I’m not standing here because I’m perfect.”

“I’m standing here because Christ made me right.” (2Cor. 5:21)

That shuts it down.

Because now your confidence—

is not in you.

It’s in Him. (1Cor. 1:26-31)

But Don’t Twist It.

This is where people get sloppy.

They hear:

“I’m righteous in Christ”.

And think:

“Cool—I can live however I want.”

No.

That’s not righteousness—

that’s rebellion with a Bible verse.

Real righteousness produces:

  • Conviction
  • Growth
  • Change

Not perfection—

but direction.

If your life never changes—

you don’t understand righteousness.

Integrity Matters.

Lived righteousness matters.

Not to earn God’s love—

but to protect your life.

Because when you live compromised—

you create openings.

Gaps.

And those gaps—

get exploited.

So this is both:

  • Identity protection
  • Lifestyle alignment

Most Christians Get Hit Here.

This is where a lot of people fall.

Not because they don’t believe in God—

but because they feel unworthy.

So they step back.

They disengage.

They stop showing up spiritually.

All because they got hit with accusation—

and didn’t have the breastplate on.

Bottom Line.

You don’t stand on your perfection.

You stand on His righteousness.

But you don’t live carelessly.

You live aligned.

Because righteousness:

Protects your heart
Guards your identity
Stabilizes your confidence

And without it—

you’re exposed.
